When new wrinkles or lines appear on the face, it can be an emotional event for many adults because it can affect everything from a person’s self-confidence to social relationships with others. When these issues are a result of aging, they can often be treated effectively with Botox therapy, which we offer here at CAS MediSpa in Bloomington, IN.
Not only can this therapy revitalize the appearance of skin and minimize fine lines and wrinkles, but it can also prevent new ones from forming with regularly scheduled treatments. So whether you’re currently dealing with these tell-tale signs of aging or looking for an effective way to prevent them, here’s how this therapy works and why it may be the most effective treatment for you.
How Does Botox Work?
Botox is a medication made from botulinum toxin, a neuromuscular blocker that relaxes the facial muscles responsible for lines and wrinkles. It’s normally injected into muscles just beneath the skin using microneedles, which help to ensure that only a small amount is used. For this reason, and the fact that the effects normally wear off with time, it’s considered to be a safe and effective treatment.
Because it also boosts collagen production within the skin, this therapy is often used to prevent the signs of aging before they start. Many patients choose to start treatment before they have any signs of aging, as collagen is one of the main proteins that contribute to the vibrant, tight appearance of healthy-looking skin.
What Happens During Treatment?
Consultation
Before beginning your treatment, we’ll conduct a consultation to go over any additional questions you might have and to discuss your expectations. We’ll want to make sure that this treatment is right for you, so we’ll also want to know about your health history, any medications you’re currently taking, and any surgeries you’ve had. We’ll also carry out a brief examination of the areas you’d like treated so that we can personalize the treatment to your needs.
Treatment
The therapy process itself is a quick and painless one that typically takes only a few minutes in our clinic in a comfortable setting. Before we inject the medication into your muscles, we’ll disinfect the area and apply a topical numbing cream. We’ll then use microneedles for the injections, which are tiny needles much smaller than the usual types used to draw blood.
If you have multiple areas of the face you’d like treated, we can do all of them in a single session or you can schedule to have them treated at a later date. While smaller muscles may need only a single injection, larger ones will typically require three to four.
Aftercare
After your appointment, you can return to your daily activities or work as usual, though there are a few precautions you’ll want to take to ensure that the medication maintains its potency. The following are just some recommendations for the first few days after treatment:
- Don’t rub the treated areas
- Refrain from strenuous activities
- Don’t lie down for the first four hours
- Avoid excessive heat exposure
- Refrain from drinking alcohol for 48 hours
How Quickly Does It Work?
Although some patients do experience results as early as a few days after treatment, you shouldn’t expect them for at least a few weeks. The majority of our patients begin to notice smoother skin and fewer wrinkles and lines about two weeks after their first appointment when the medication has had enough time to fully relax muscles.
If you’ve had stress or tension in your life for a long time, this can often have an effect on muscle tone and can be a factor in how long it takes for results to be seen. Other factors include your diet, metabolism, lifestyle, and skin texture, as all of these things can affect both the muscles and skin and how quickly they respond to this treatment.
How Long Do the Results Last?
Although this medication is temporary, the results can last a surprisingly long time, with most patients maintaining improvements for three to four months. In some cases, the results can last up to six months, especially for those who have been receiving regular treatments for longer than one year. This is because this therapy is capable of re-training your muscles over time so they contract less when making facial expressions and relax more quickly after.
There’s a cumulative effect from the muscles remaining paralyzed for long periods of time where any tension or stiffness begins to dissipate and the muscles become easier to treat over time with each therapy session.
How Often Can I Receive Treatments?
You can receive regular treatments every three to four months, which is the maximum recommended amount. You shouldn’t need additional treatments sooner than three months, though some muscles may not be as responsive to smaller dosages of the medication and may require more. In these cases, you can always return for a follow-up appointment after three to four weeks if needed.
How Do Lines and Wrinkles Differ?
Lines and wrinkles can appear on the face for different reasons. Some are simply temporary, while others may be more long-lasting, especially those caused by aging. The following are some of the more commonly seen ones that you might experience at some point in your life:
Sleep Lines
If you’ve ever woken up in the morning and noticed lines on your face that later faded away as you went about your day, these are known as sleep lines, and they can sometimes become permanent over time.
Gravitational Folds
Even gravity can play a role in the formation of lines and wrinkles, as a decrease in collagen production can lead to sagging skin and sharp, well-defined creases known as gravitational folds.
Expression Lines
The lines that become visible with certain facial expressions, such as smiling and frowning, are known as expression lines, and they normally become more noticeable and permanent with older age.
Botox can’t treat gravitational folds and sleep lines but is highly effective in the treatment of expression lines and their associated wrinkles. This is because of both its muscle-relaxing and collagen-boosting effects, which can smooth the skin out to reduce the appearance of these types of issues.
What Is the Best Age To Get Botox?
There is no specific age recommended for Botox treatment, though many patients choose to start their initial treatments in their 20s before lines or wrinkles have developed. It’s your choice whether you prefer to schedule appointments regularly or as needed, as they both offer advantages.
Regular Treatments
Some of our patients prefer to have regularly scheduled appointments, and many schedule their first in their mid to late 20s. By scheduling regular appointments with us every three to four months, you can stay proactive with your skincare, which can help to prevent some lines and wrinkles from developing. Patients who schedule preventative treatments like this normally prefer to get injections in multiple areas where these skin conditions are likely to appear.
As-Needed Care
Other patients of ours have chosen to schedule their first appointments in their 30s, 40s, or older ages when fine lines and wrinkles became noticeable or bothersome, and only return after the effects have worn off or when touch-ups are needed. While this approach doesn’t have the same preventative benefits as regularly scheduled treatments, it gives you time to assess new lines and wrinkles and decide which ones you’d like treated.
What Makes Botox Therapy Safe?
This treatment is considered to be relatively safe and appropriate for adults of all ages. Because its effects are temporary and eventually wear off, it’s much safer than surgeries or other cosmetic treatments that involve making permanent changes to your appearance.
It’s also much less invasive than surgery, as we only use small-gauge needles to make the injections, which are virtually painless. Also, Botox has been used around the world for decades now and has become the most popular treatment for wrinkles and lines, not only because of its effectiveness but also because of its safety profile.
